machine and manufacturing shops use FDM machines to build parts "on the fly" so their processes can be brought back up after a part failure in hours rather than days.
NASA is going to use FDM to build parts in space.
Von Neumann machines are ones that can build replications of themselves.  this could get out of hand!!!
