what's the CO2 emission of a jogger per km? a car is 190g per km

for a jogger I've come up with as surprising 37g Km

here's my logic.

I'm assuming 10km per hour, using 1000 calories per hour, which is reasonable I believe (I've done a bit of running)

I've got a figure for carbohydrates of 4 calories per gram,

so calories used per km = 1000/10 = 100
carbs uses per km = 100/4 = 25g

glucose is C6H12O6 I believe, so molecular mass = 6 * 12 + 12 * 1 + 6 * 16 = 180

each molecule of sugar will produce 6 CO2 molecules, molecular mass of each 12 + 16 * 2 = 44

so it's (6 * 44)/180 * 25 = 36.7g

so joggers are belching out a fair amount of greenhouse gases.

Whereas if we bury them and leave them for a few million years we'll have fresh oil for future generations. Sounds like an excellent plan.

Politicians produce a fair amount of greenhouse gases too.

Hmm.  I was taught that cars are quite inefficient at converting fuel energy into kinetic energy.  If the calculation is correct, given the mass of the car vs the mass of the person, it would seem that people are even more inefficient.  Is it surprising that evolution hasn't created one creature with wheels?...

Of course, the CO2 output from humans (and other animals) is balanced by the carbon cycle.  We grow the food that we and our farm animals eat, which stores carbon from the atmosphere.

Perhaps instead we should harvest the sedentary and use their body fat for biofuel...  wink
