I have a bit of a problem with my current job. Aside from = I hate this fucking POS job! My unit manager called me tonight (after dinner) and told me that I could no longer DO MY JOB...
I said, "why is that Sheri?" She said, "Because you have a doctor's note that states you cannot be exposed to secondhand smoke directly or indirectly due to current ongoing treatment with asthma." I said, "so what are you suggesting?" She said, "that you take a per diem job with the partial hospital program at half the rate of your regular pay with no guarantee of hours." I retorted, "oh that sounds really exciting considering that I would not have any union help..." So as you can imagine - that is a bit too obvious that they want me to go away because I can't breath secondhand smoke! Where do I go from here? I don't care if you smoke or you don't smoke - I have an asthma condition which I need to stay away from smoke (including wood stove smoke) in every form in order to have a decent quality of life.
I do have IT interviews scheduled during this month and next - but not soon enough to rescue my finances. Do I need to measure the distance to the smoking porches on each floor and get it written in a doctors note? Trust me - DH would do this for me! They told me to leave this place of employment ASAP.

I say you walk around with a squirt gun and take matters into your own hands! Make that a 'super soaker'!!!!
Really, that doctor will save your lungs. My lungs got me through a decade of foundry smoke and sand, and I promised them no more. I'll call legal aid and see what local laws are available.
And Sherri sounds like a real bithnahalf!

I wonder if an attorney for the ALA would take an interest in your situation. People work in all sorts of hustle environments everyday. You just need the right sort of protection. http://www.bunz...isance-Level-Acid-Gas-Respirator Its not as silly as it may seem. It could buy you the extra time you need.
I don’t understand direct secondhand vs indirect secondhand. Well… it sounds shitty. I hope your situation improves drastically – and soon!

Come over to France Shek. There is always need for someone with IT knowledge. No smoking allowed in public places here. That includes companies. Starting the first of january 2008: no smoking allowed in bars or restaurants either. No smoking over here means NO SMOKING. Not even in dedicated areas.
As a smoker that pisses me off.
Having said that, I don't even smoke at home because of the kids. :-))
Anyway, you're welcome over here.

Thank F. for Irish no smoking laws. Just like Rem says. No smoking in any work place, including pubs. You'd love it here. Even the weather you'll get used to eventually. And plenty of IT jobs.

LOL cigarette smoke is the only politically incorrect pollutant in our environment
Mind though, I do tolerate non-smokers. The rotten part of the system is the state hypocrisy. Either smoking is forbidden and selling cigarettes also, or smoking is allowed. Over here nowadays, tobacconists sell cigarettes nobody has the right to smoke in the open.
I suppose the taxes on cigarette sales are more important than public health.

I think you're staring yourself blind on something here, Rem.
Let's compare this to something else: taking a shit. Everybody has a perfect, inalienable right to take a shit when they feel the urge come upon them. However, it is illegal to just drop your trousers in public and dump your load whenever you like it.
I see no difference between that and smoking. Smoke as much as you like. Kill yourself. That's your prerogative. But do not offend people by doing it in their face.

I'll never let the smell of my shit offend other people. ;-))

If everybody has a perfect, inalienable right to take a shit when they feel the urge, then restrictions on doing it public mean it is no longer a "perfect, inalienable right"

Wrong. It's only taking away from the rights if you're prevented from doing it anywhere.

It is my inalienable right to have a proper french lunch now. That's something absolutely great in France. Heavy food, lots of wine and an afternoon sleep before going back to work. So I'll leave you to your dung...
C U later

So, when I have an urge to shit, I do not have a right to shit in public. Sounds like a restriction on my rights to me.
And remember, corn is just a bookmark in your poo.

The UK demanded an anti smoking law and Tony Blair tried to blur the issue by saying that it wouldn't apply in a pub if the pub didn't serve food, but people lobbied against him and said 'no we want the same as in Ireland' and blur couldn't have his own way on that occasion. Also his daft arrangement was going to be only in England, not Wales or Scotland. The dis-United Kingdom.
I've not seen smoking in any of my workplaces since 1993, it's now almost always illegal in a workplace.
You can't smoke in the UK in any enclosed or partially enclosed public area, you can smoke in the Houses of Parliament bars though I believe.
We generally use gas and electricity for heating in offices, wood or coal burning fires are rare outside 'quaint' pubs.

LOL actually good news all around!
I now have a new doctor’s note which states this:
Under treatment for asthma (smoke exposure reactive airway)
With the following restrictions: Pt. cannot work in a smoking area or an adjacent room next to the smoking area. Pt is allowed to work in all other areas of the facility.
Also my workplace gets an ultimatum on Monday morning regarding my bitch boss. If they do not return me to work the other three floors and remove me from the problem floor - they have to pay me full salary while I stay at home. Now I do believe in paying union dues!
I am very fortunate to have the director of my union (he is based in RI) taking control of this situation. I feel like I am in the hands of Allstate!
Cheerios and happy turkey day to all.
