has anyone ever been to any other boards where flaming is out of control?  (not this one of course).  I was using a game playing site and got involved in an out of control flame war, I was honestly full of indignant aggression over, err, nothing much.  Why do you get these flamers?  Are they social inadequates, bullies, just messing around??

I think, with a lot of them, it's just repressed anger and aggression which they feel at ease letting out in an environment that isn't face to face.

Ive read a few - complete waste of time. I think Huntress has it right.
But then again, I suppose there are likely as many reasons as there are participants.

IOW - I haven't got the slightest idea.

isn't that the same unbridled agression one might witnesses at, for instance, soccer (futbol) games?  don't they call them "Hooligans"?

Many are bullies.  Try Usenet if you want to fan a flame fast of massive proportion...

I agree with Sandi too.  I think it's more a case of the "bad day at work (or school), come home and kick the dog" syndrome.  Only they are lashing out at someone that they aren't likely to meet in real life.  In a more primal sense, it's a survival instinct: attempting to be further up in the food-chain through aggression.  Yet if someone responds to them by (rightfully) making them look stupid, then they almost always seem to play the victim.

"Humorous descriptions of various troll types" from the first link I think is worth a read.

the forum is at the itsyourturn web site, I didn't complain about the flames, but it seems that other problems did generate complaints, and they're closing their boards!!!
