They're planning on 'phasing out' old style bulbs in the uk, seems to be ill thought out, they emit toxic chemicals apparently, the CO2 saving is based on a usage pattern that is often not 'typical', they can't be used with dimmer switches which of course many people may have recently had fitted.

They are doing the same thing in California too, and then probably the US eventually. While incandescant aren't the best lighting choice it is the cheapest and most widely used, not to mention if you break a bulb you don't need a toxic waste suit to clean it up.

In colder climate locations (e.g. Sweden...) the energy loss in form of heat (instead of visible light) from the bulb is of course not a "loss" at all. The incandescent bulbs are just an alternative means of heating apartments and houses. /RID

PCs are quite good heaters, if you're cold then run a chess program to heat up the cpu and have it dumped into the room, in fact a high end game is probably best because you'll heat up cpu, graphics card, memory and maybe even hard drive + dvd drive

Same thing is planned in Aus. I just renovated the house and put dimmer switches in all the rooms, which are, as you say, now completely useless, d'oh!

Those bulbs dont work well (if at all) in the cold. I have a few in the basement - when its cold, its dark. ![[grr]](http://www.carobit.com/Forum/images/sm/grr.jpg)
I'll have to remember to stock up on incandescents before they hit the black market. Although I suspect they will be around for quite some time to come. Not every lighting application can be satisfied with florescent bulbs.

I love nanny police states. Hurray. Fuck the free market! Where the hell is my corn based auto. Who cares if it is efficient or not. Government knows best.
Is it me? I thought the Soviets lost.

I saw a hospitality waiver for Bob Dylan, and in it he demanded 'incandescent lights' in his dressing room, so maybe he'll have to stop touring at last, I mean unfortunately
