Do people in poor or famine hit countries ever get anorexia? I'm not trying to offend people, it's a genuine thought.

I suppose its possible. To test it, 'tho, you'd have to make sure they had enough food to survive then see if they didn't eat it. If they didn't eat the food offered to them, then they might be anorexic...or dead.

I would imagine that they don't really associate slim bodies with supermodels and good health - I think one of its causes is social conditioning.
I also think it's only applicable to people who actually have access to food and who deny themselves of it. One can hardly abstain from something that's absent.

I believe anorexia is a condition in which a perceived lack of control about what is happening in one's life is compensated by excessive control over one's own body. I dare say in a society in which there is famine, anorexia as such may be rare, but the above may express itself differently?

From what I uderstand anorexia is a mental condition caused mainly by a problem with body image. The body image problem is far more prevalent in countries where basic nessecities are in abundance and people get bombarded with minutely by their constant exposure to the media and pick up on the boundless vanity of our current society.

psychological self-hatred is a human condition. we dislike in others what we see most in ourselves. we see flaws when others see normalcy. when the dieting rational goes overboard, when a glass of wine goes overboard, when socializing goes overboard, we get to be anorexic, alcoholic, or maybe sexfiend. believe me, i've dated some. we sometimes lose balance; i'd say that's why they call it a psycho-logical disorder. the logic goes out of whack. so, yea, anorexia might not present because they're probably trying very hard to eat, but when a hose is plugged up in one end, the pressure will find or make an outlet somewhere else along the hose.

Anorexia is a topic that I just can't sink my teeth into. It just doesn't have enough meat. Now, bulimia, that's a problem that keeps coming up over and over again.
