has it flopped?  Never heard much interest in it.  My kids XBox has conked out, choice between new XBox to play games on £70, or think about new console of some sort.  Was the playing of original XBox games on the 360 ever resolved??

M$ almost made their target of 10M machines sold by the end of last year - I think they sold 9.7M.  Out of their competitors, PS3 has had serious setbacks, and due to managerial cock-ups 360 have taken several exclusives from them (Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto, Army Of Two...), leaving little temptation to spend almost double the cost on the hardware (there aren't many games out for the PS3 yet either).  The Wii is doing really well as far as I know (http://www.wiidamage.com/).

I think latest estimates of market share put PS3, Wii and 360 at almost 1/3 each by the end of 2010, with 360 at a negligible lead.  Having said that, the XBox isn't likely to break into the Japanese market.

There are several XBox exclusives that are making quite big news at the moment too: Gears Of War, Viva Pinata, Lost Planet, Halo 3, Bioshock...

XBox backwards compatibility is not brilliant.  It uses an emulator, rather than hardware, so new games are added to the supported list regularly:

There are known problems with the XBox 360 hardware overheating (the infamous "red circle of death"), and has forced MS to extend their hardware warranties.  There is going to be a new version of the 360 to be brought out later this year with a 65nm processor and true HD output which should finally resolve that problem.

For kids, I think the Wii may not be a bad choice (try not to smash your telly with their controller though), but, personally, I don't like the type of games that Nintendo typically release.

All these supposed 'next gen' game console are still basically in the beta or release candidate phase, in other words they aren't finished with them yet.

I wouldn't mind having a Wii or an Xbox 360, and I would like to upgrade to Vista some day too. But there is no way I am going to sink any money, or time for that matter, on stuff that ain't done.

You'll be waiting one helluva long time then.  When is anything, especially software, actually "done"?  I used to get into that vicious cycle with graphics cards: I'd save up for that Voodoo 2, and by that time I'd be looking at an nVidia 7800, but I wouldn't want to buy one, because a week later they'd be selling them for half the price.

There is always going to be innovation and development in technology.  There comes a time when one just has to bite the bullet... (I've got a 360, incidentally, and I think it's excellent - it also shows what MS have learned from the original XBox).  The software is also regularly updated (there was a major upgrade late last year, and another minor one yesterday), and they are planning to expand on the HD film/tv rental features (and hopefully enabling them in Europe).

I also save money upgrading my PC to play the latest games.

Needless to say: Xbox 720, Poo (whatever it's called), and PS4 are already under development...

Shouldn't the next one after the Wii be the Ballz or Vag or possibly Anii?

Sony released the mini PS2 shortly after the original (bulky) model. I'm hoping Nintendo release the WeeWii.
