i'm wondering how many amerikans are too blind/stoopid to see that the oil futures brokers let off the screws so the republikans can keep their jobs.
i mean, let's face it... they'd like to maintain the stats-quo, and so they let off the fuckjob for 2 months (amerikans have a disgustingly short memory) so the republikans can have SOMETHING to hang their hats on during the runup to the election today.
seriously, all i've heard on the radio is how low the price of gas IS.  do they really think we don't fucking remember the last year-and-a-half with their bone up our collective ass???? (oh, yea... they're probably right)
today i bought gas at $2.02/gal (if there are 3.76 liters/us gallon, and .78 euros to a dollar, then that's E.42/ltr).
i wonder how long it'll take before it gets back up to where it was just 2 months ago ($3.00/gal, or E.62/ltr), now the election's over.

I don't know. But anytime is too soon.

Looks like the Dem's did some damage. Mostly "middle of the road" types, though.
Maybe the far-right and far-left will get the message.

Bah. The last time our petrol prices were anywhere near as low as €0.62 per liter, we didn't actually have Euros yet.

US prices have been as high as €.62 per litre - that surprises me.

You really believe in a conspiracy with oil future traders?  Personally I don't believe it, trying to manipulate the oil market like that would only play into the hands of other traders, allowing them to clean up - who would control this sort of thing exactly?

Traders are too greedy and paranoid to try and help someone besides themselves.

>>trying to manipulate the oil market like that would only play into the hands of other traders, allowing them to clean up<<

i think it's called collusion.... when competitors sort of wink/nod in unison to manipulate things so they all get the results that'll best suit them.

let's say a year or so ago, the buzz around the office cooler is that the republikans will need oil prices to come down at least a few months before the election, so they can point to how well they're doing holding down those nasty oil prices.  how do prices come down, you may ask???  it happens when supply goes up.... and how does supply go up???  high prices, making production more attractive.  so, let's rig the markets (ok, let's see hands of those who don't think they can do it) so prices go sky-high for the next few quarters, increasing production (to capitalize on the higher prices), create a glut on the world market which will be higher than normal for the autumn season, which will drop prices dramatically..... just in time for our lobbyist's friends to hang their hats on.  our friends and relatives in the Bush dynasty get to stay in power, and we get to go back to unregulated habishary on the markets, jacking the working poor, creating more record-setting profits in our favorite stock holdings; ExxonMobile, DiamondShamrock, BP,....

hold on the Republicans lost their jobs didn't they?

Oil price volitility is due to the fact that demand for oils is at its peak and it is now becominf difficult to sustain production at that peak level.  Anys sort of major supply problem, hurricane etc, causes an oil price spike, in turn the oil price spike causes people around the world to want to ramp up production where possible, so you might end up with a mini-glut.  The glut will not last and you can now expect a relentless increase in the average oil price.

Then there's always profiteering and big money traders, some actually funded by the oil companies, that manipulate the prices. I doubt there is much collusion, but if someone is making a ton of money they ain't going to bitch too loudly.

looks like i'm 2 months behind... Googled "manipulate oil futures" and found from Sunday, September 17, 2006:
But the larger question that spurred all of this discussion is, can or would oil companies dictate domestic gas prices on the eve of an election that is clearly threatening the Republican majorities in Congress, majorities that have been unbashedly generous in their treatment of the oil industry.
to me it's as clear as the sunrise.  just because i'm a paranoid conspiracy theorist, doesn't mean they're NOT plotting to get me :)
