Sometimes you make videos that just contain imagery and text, like, for example, a slideshow or an animation. And such videos are much enhanced with a nice bit of background music.
And face it, many of us who make videos are not musicians ourselves, so all we can do is use music made by others.
As you know YouTube has implemented automated software to recognise copyrighted material. There is nothing more frustrating than uploading a video only to find that the artist or record label claims copyright and your video will be blocked. Yes, you can use "audioswap" but it's a nuisance and the choices are rather limited. And if you added some spoken word into your video you're completely fucked.
So I am compiling a list of artists and/or record labels who allow you to use their material in videos not made for profit. Some ask you to pay a small royalty. Others will claim the copyright on the audio, but have an agreement with YouTube to allow the content to remain (and ads placed beside your videos), and yet others will not cause any problems whatsoever. Whatever the case may be, the important thing is that if you do use their music, your video will not end up being blocked by YouTube.
In this thread I present that list. I will try to keep it up to date to the best of my ability.
Cheers
Pino

sites like ccMixter, Magnatune, and Jamenda have lots of Creative Commons music that you can freely use.

ANY music by artists with Universal Music Group / UMG / UniversalMusicGroup is allowed on YouTube. They WILL claim copyright, but they allow the content to stay. All that will happen is that ads are shown on your page.
CORRECTION - It appears that they may recently have changed their policy. I would advise not to use their material for now.
CORRECTION - They have turned into Copyright Nazis. Avoid their material like the plague.

P.J. Harvey (from own experience) - will claim copyright but will allow content to stay with ads.
CORRECTION - Her content is now "blocked in some countries". If you're happy to limit your audience to the USA, Canada and most of Western Europe, you may not think this is a big deal, but I don't see why some of the world shouldn't be watching my videos.
Avoid PJ
Pity.

The "can't be bought" album contains material for which others hold the copyright so you cannot use material from there. The rest is free to use.
