I get it that even if I install 4gb, that my xp will only see 3gb of it.
But - if I am running a Virtual PC with Vista installed and I give that VM 2gb, will it use the "invisible" 1gb?

My laptop currently only has 2gb.. i have a slot for one more.. it's a dual processor, i've read that I should put in another 2gb. I know prices aren't that high, but money is tight if I can just put a 1gb in there.. or should i *really* put the 2 in there?

My laptop runs great on 3GB of RAM and Vista Home Premium.  And I only have 2GB on my XP Pro PC which runs just as fast.

Given that the VM runs on top of the OS, no, it's not going to be able to address RAM that your OS cannot address.

For that matter, the 32 bit version of Vista (if I remember is required by Virtual PC) which has much of the same address limitations of 32 bit XP--4GB address space, some of which will be allocated to non-memory functionality.

ok - so there's no advantage to getting 4gb.. but do I *really* need to run in pairs?

As long as it's compatible with your system it shouldn't be a problem.  Try the scanner at http://www.crucial.com/

If the pairs match on dual channel memory motherboards you get a slight  performance boost, other than that, no.

I always use crucial :-) but I wanted to understand why I had to go with another 2gb dimm if my system would only recognize 3.

thanks!
