Windows XP (don't know if it's home or pro). It's not my system - it's my brother in laws They had 3 profiles setup on it. They've had it for awhile. My sister boots up, gets a message that they need to activate their version... all 3 profile NAMES are still there.. but all the settings seem to be gone... no desktop icons, etc.
any ideas? can they even get them back???
thanks

Try system restore to a date previous to the activation.
If that doesn't work out, create a new profile and copy and paste from "documents and settings\firstoldprofile\etc" everything you want to see on your screen.

the thing is.. if the old profiles are intact - why aren't they showing their settings. They CAN log into the profiles.. they're just back to the fresh install settings...

???? Strange... Perhaps the desktop.ini files are missing or replaced by empty ones. Must admit that I'm puzzled. On the other hand; the fact that an activation was requested, means that something went beserk.
