I think that I prefer PC based, because then my mails aren't lying around on someone else's server. Although, if I am concerned about security, I suppose I ought to PGP everything too, but correspondent's don't always agree.

If I go that route, then a USB stick mail program is in order - probably Mozilla Thunderbird, unless anyone knows of a better alternative?

The problem is that I then have to be sure to have the USB stick with me at all times (where 98% of the values of "all" are contained in the set {home, work}).

Web based mail is the alternative. I currently use RunBox, not because they are Norwegian and I was living in Norway when I first chose them, but because they were the only one at the time who fulfilled my complex requirements for collecting mails from multiple addresses and filtering them into multiple folders.

Now they are barely a viable concern. A team of six or eight.  I think, with only one programmer. Requests made for simple features and agreed three or four years ago are yet to be implemented; prices are rising; and functionality was long ago overtaken by free webmail services.

Only inertia is keeping me with them, but maybe now it's time for a change.

I am weighing up Gmail and Yahoo! mail (don't worry, my email address won't change, we're just talking about where the emails are collected and read). Any opinions?

Another alternative is to host the web based mail at my own website, but I am unaware of any free software which is as powerful as Gmail or Yahoo! Mail. Do you now of any?

Or, just possibly, Chandler (http://chandlerproject.org/features), although I am not sure if it is quite ready for primetime yet.

I use gmail and Outlook RPC/HTTPS and it seems to work well.

If you're prepared to host mail yourself, I guess IMAP is an option?

I decided on Gmail in the end.
