I switched to AVG a year ago. I do use the free version.
Recently, I ran the norton AV online scan tool and it found a trojan on my machine - spsvs - Softprobe Spagent
I already had it disabled in the Run. But what gets me is - why didn't AVG say anything? I can't even find it in their encyclopedia.... Is AVG not good enough?

btw - some sites say it may be legit.. but i didn't install it!

A problem I've been seeing more and more of with AVG is false positives.  It seems like a couple of times a month, AVG will decide that some harmless file that hasn't been altered since installation is suddenly a trojan.

I never get alerts.. oh - some emails placed in the vault, but that's it. I mean - it's sort of a good thing, but at the same time, this Spagent thing doesn't have me happy...

guess I'll just run the symantec tool once in a while.

I have the same problem with Avira Personal Free.  It tried to tell me that Explorer was a trojan!  LOL  laughing

About the only AV I know of that still works well is Sophos. I used to be a fan of AVG and Norman (not Norton, huge difference) but after having to work on several machines infected with some nasty stuff even while supposedly protected have changed my mind. Also, I used to like Spybot and AdAware for spyware, but same scenario, now I prefer MalwareBytes.

But you better delete it just to be safe.

I almost did!

That is nearly as bad as this one user I had that 'cleaned up' his computer by deleting all those dll files. But he did it on his own accord, not because an AV app told him too, his dog might have mentioned something to him though.

I've been getting annoyed at how often AVG is requiring restarts after updating.  This used to be a rare event and it seems to be about twice a week lately.

you want irritating? Tried to install avg8.5 on my laptop. It kept failing. can't remember what I did next - but required a restart - and I kept getting a BSOD..
could get into safemode, tried a new profile
BSOD
researched online, of cours, but couldn't find anything. Tried uninstalling AVG, checked that nothing for it ran on startup
BSOD
safemode w/networking - programs wouldn't start - tho they started in regular safemode.
So.. i give up. I've backed up my files and am running a repair.
