A large majority of users are still plugging along with IE, despite the superior features of Firefox. So if the Google hypeware lives up to it's rep, this may be more of a Firefox killer than an IE killer...

This may seem weird to most of the Microsoft haters around, but having extensively tested both browsers (Firefox and ie), I'm NOT convinced of the superiority of Firefox. As far as Google is concerned, my feeling is that they are doing exactly what we all (myself included) hated about Microsoft. They use one product ( at least its reputation (search engine)) to take you to other software. Resulting in a sort of abuse of position. Microsoft makes you pay for the tiniest bit of software: with Google its free, because they call it beta. Not a very loyal competition I'd say. (Having said that, I'm NOT crying for Microsoft.)

the only reason i'm not such a M$ hater is that they've been hobbled by federal judgments. not so for Google. they're free and unencumbered to rape me. "here comes the new boss; same as the old boss"
(i like the "NoScript" add-on in FireFox)

I like and still use IE... But I think FF3 is better than IE7 for security and extensibility.

Google has done a fantastic job in some areas, which is why I'm curious to see their browser.
-Gmail kicks all other webmail to the curb. -The Google desktop search is an awesome app. (MS had to rebuild their Windows search to compete.) -Google Earth is also really cool. (MS Virtual Earth was the copycat.)

Gmail is good; I use it The Google desktop search is functionnally OK, but what is its purpose. If you are an organized person, you'll never need it. Google Earth is really cool, and I agree that MS Virtual Earth is the copycat.

I am not convinced of the superiority of Firefox either, too many wanky little teens yapping about how great it is kinda makes me not like it as much as I might. I am not an MS hater either. If someone make a better product, great, but I am not going to trash the one I used before, I am more mature than that.
BTW I am reading and posting here in Google Chrome. I like it, but I am not ready to give up on IE or FF yet.

I'm a reasonably organized person with masses of email and umpteen files that go back to work I've done 10 years ago. It comes in useful for my crap memory.

Just gave it a test drive myself. They're going to have to fix some stuff before I could use it for real. Wheel scrolling seems to be broken, and scrolling in general seems jerky. Thankfully most of the web work I've done looks okay in it.

They have their own OS too, of course: http://www.thinkgos.com/
phase 1 - get everyone dependant on "free" google applications phase 2 - launch a browser that will take care of "enhancements" to said apps phase 3 ...
It's the crossover between business and politics that concerns me most about all of this: the software remains free, at the marginal cost of one's freedom...

That's google's general TOS which includes services like Gmail, Google Groups, Blogger, YouTube, etc.
I don't see anywhere in their TOS the part about "perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute..." It's just not there.
The rest is pretty commonplace and common sense.

Ooh... Looks like the mouse issue is with older Intellipoint drivers. (I was on version 4.) Updated drivers and everything is jake.
There's also already an update to Chrome. Looks like they added a spell check feature. So far, me likey. (I have to say that Gmail runs faster in Chrome too.)

>Chrome's javascript interpreter is *blazing* fast. Very impressive.
It's the true genius bit of Chrome. It's about four times faster than IE8, and twice as fast as FF3 on the sun spider benchmark.
