You may have heard the Dr. Seuss Story "What was I afraid of", about a creature who meets a pair of "pale green pants, with nobody inside them".

Just in case you haven't, my next comment is the original story.

But I thought that wasn't fair. There are two sides to every story. So in the next comment, I'm telling the story, from the perspective of the pale green pants.

Enjoy.

The original:

What Was I Afraid Of?

Well,I was walking in the night
And I saw nothing scary.
For I have never been afraid
Of anything. Not very.

Then I was deep within the woods
When, suddenly, I spied them.
I saw a pair of pale green pants
With nobody inside them!

I wasn't scared. But, yet, I stopped.
What could those pants be there for?
What could a pair of pants at night
Be standing in the air for?

And then they moved! Those empty pants!
They kind of started jumping.
And then my heart, I must admit,
It kind of started thumping.

So I got out. I got out fast
As fast as I could go, sir,
I wasn't scared. But pants like thatI did not care for. No, sir.

After that, a week went by.
Then one dark night in Grin-itch
(I had to do an errand there & fetch some Grin-itch spinach).
Well, I had fetched the spinach.
I was starting back through town
When those pants raced round a corner
And they almost knocked me down!

I lost my Grin-itch spinach
But I didn't even care.
I ran for home! Believe me,I had really had a scare!

Now, bicycles were never made
For pale green pants to ride 'em,
Especially spooky pale green pants
With nobody inside them!

And the NEXT night, I was fishing
For Doubt-trout on Roover River
When those pants came rowing toward me!
Well, I began to shiver.
And by now I was SO frightened
That, I'll tell you, but I hate to.
I screamed and rowed away and lost
My hook and line and bait, too!

I ran and found a Brickel bush.
I hid myself away.I got brickels in my britches
But I stayed there anyway.
I stayed all night. The next night, too.
I'd be there still, no doubt,
But I had to do an errand
So, the next night, I went out.

I had to do an errand,
Had to pick a peck of Snide
In a dark and gloomy Snide-field
That was almost nine miles wide.
I said, 'I do not fear those pantsWith nobody inside them.'
I said, and said, and said those words.
I said them. But I lied them.

Then I reached inside a Snide bush
And the next thing that I knew,
I felt my hand touch someone!
And I'll bet that you know who.
And there I was! Caught in the Snide!
And in that dreadful place
Those spooky, empty pants and I
Were standing face to face!

I yelled for help,I screamed. I shrieked.
I howled. I yowled. I cried,
'Oh, save me from these pale green pants
With nobody inside!'

But then a strange thing happened. Why those pants began to cry!
Those pants began to tremble; they were just as scared as I!

I never heard such whimpering
And I began to see
That I was just as strange to them
As they were strange to me!

I put my arm around their waist
And sat right down beside them
I calmed them down.
Poor empty pants
With nobody inside them.

And now we meet quite often,
Those empty pants and I,
And we never shake or tremble.
We both smile
And we say'Hi!'

The other side of the story:

What Was I Afraid Of? - The pants' story.

One night I floated happily
just minding my own business
doing all my exercises
for my health and fitness

I jogged into a wood and then
I got the strange sensation
that somebody was watching me
I stopped with trepidation

Then suddenly I saw the thing
that quietly observed me
with great big eyes, quite silently
which really quite unnerved me

It freaked me out, this silent thing
and then I got the jitters
for I am really not that fond
of creepy looking critters

For spooky things that look so weird
I couldn't feel affection
but thankfully it ran off in
the opposite direction

One week later, as I raced
my bicycle in Grin-itch
(A town which, amongst other things
is famous for its spinach)
Thinking not at all of spinach
I tore down the street
when I, blasting past the creature,
nearly knocked it off its feet!

Its spinach went a-flying
but I didn't even care
I raced away in record time
I'd really had a scare!

The streets are made for bicycles
and cars and trams to ride on
and not for scary things to stalk
witout a bell or light on!

The NEXT night I was rowing
when I thought that I was dreaming
For there it was, that thing again
and this time it was screaming
It shook as if in fits of rage
and threw projectiles at me
I panicked and I rowed away
afraid that it would catch me

I stayed indoors, I locked the door
and hid myself away
And even though my food ran out
I stayed there anyway
I stayed all night, the next night too
I'd be there still, no doubt,
if I hadn't gotten hungry,
but I did, so I went out

I had gotten rather hungry
so I could no longer hide
and the only thing I wanted
was a yummy peck of Snide
I told myself I'm not afraid
of scary things at night
I kept repeating "I'm not scared"
I said it, but I lied

And just when I had found a bush
of lovely Snide to snack from
I froze in terror as I felt
a hand touching my bottom!
I turned around and there it was
I nearly popped my seams
It stared at me and deafened me
with bloodcurdling screams

I was too scared to scream right back
was petrified instead
just wishing for a helping hand
to save me from this dread

I could say I was brave but then
you'd know that I was lying
I wasn't brave at all, in fact
I simply started crying

Terrified, I whimpered
for I really couldn't see
how anyone could find me here
to try and rescue me

Then the situation changed
the screaming thing just stopped
it sat right down upon the ground
beside where I had dropped

It put its arm around me,
so it did, to my surprise
but once I'd gotten over that
it really was quite nice

So I'm no longer frightened
as there is no reason why
and everytime I meet the thing
I wave and I say "Hi"
