Anyone use them? Which one? Pros/cons of using one?

The only one I have found that works wortha damn is ccleaner
http://www.ccleaner.com/

www.ubuntu.com ;)

I agree on ccleaner for standard cleaning. It's repair capacities are limited though. You got the quality you pay for, and ccleaner is FREE.
Error Repair Professional is good at cleaning and resizing the registry. It really does a fair job. But it's not free.
Tune-Up utilities are OK.
It all depends what you want to do. I suppose this is for business sake, and you've got other things to do than sticking your nose in the registry.
Anyway feel free to ask. I use(d) the three of them.

PS I lost your mail address some four years ago. ;-))

PPS ubuntu is ok, but it will have its own share of initialisation problems. Most users of ubuntu or oter linux like packages are so much against microsoft that a normal discussion over things not so good in linux is just impossible.
ms win31 had ini files, win95 had registry (a weird one though), winnt4 and 5 have a registry which is not so bad, but has a major problem which is the unability of automatically downsizing.

I also use CCleaner. It does a very good job of detecting/removing orphaned DLLS, temporary files and unused registry keys etc. I suppose the best endorsement I can make about it is that I've never had to recover my computer after running it!

pros are you have a clean, hygienic and neatly trimmed registry, cons are that nagging doubt that your PC will not start up again.

*lol* Hooligan - but you got it.
I went ahead and ran ccleaner. It found a lot of orphans out there.

Why did I want it... well, it all started when adobe wouldn't open. It started to - then shut down quickly. I had plenty of ram left (1.5gb machine, had 800mb unused, it looked like) After shutting down yahoo - adobe opened.

So, looking at my task manager - well, the explorer was really using up resources, and had high peaks. Did some searching online, and they led me to the desire to clean my registery (the link to explorer and registry was not a factor..)

Tho, I do find it irritating that I have 1.5gb and when it gets down to 800mb or less available, I start running into problems. Can anyone explain *that*.

My ram setup is strange to - 2 (512) and 2 (256) - but 1 512 and 1 256 match for speed... why didn't they make them all the same? I am thinking of upping to a solid 2, but I would still have an odd chip

of course, after running out of propane this morning and being billed $900 to refill.. *sigh*

Yah, you live in the tropics or something?

From: Send Carobit Mail starl On: 2008/02/01 13:54:39

South Dakota - you know, in the South, JOK, where it's warm this time of year.
Tracy, (i hope i'm not stating the obvious here) always keep an eye on your
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (if there is one)
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce (if there is one)
get to know what belongs there, and if something goofy happens while you're gambling online, check these registry keys before you turn off your 'puter.
(we now return you to your regularly scheduled INTELLIGENT conversation)

yup. I use codestuff starter to control mine. Turn off a *lot* of irritating autostart crap. Also recognize what's normal in my task manager.

Hi,
Have you ever used autoruns or process explorer from sysinternals by Mark Russinovich? Their company has been bought by Microsoft.
The old link www.sysinternals.com still takes you there though. A lot of handy tools there. It 'll help you understand what is going on in your machine, instead of deciding for you what is good and what is not (without that nagging doubt that your PC won't start up afterwards).
The first time I ran autoruns my lower jaw almost fell off. Hadn't got the slightest idea of all the rubbish windows is able to start.
