Very disappointed with Windows Vista. The most useful feature to me, parental controls, has abruptly ceased to function, I get a message
'Unable to make changes to parental controls settings. If this problem persists, see your system administrator.'
I'm the system admin, and there's nothing to tell me what I'm supposed to do, what a dumb error message.
No one at EE knows how to fix it, none of the stuff I found on the web fixes it either.
Anyone know if you can pass these problems to Microsoft?

oh joy I've checked, you get a 90 day trial and then have to pay them for support on their own malfunctioning crap,
I sense a 'not fit for purpose' UK consumer rights refund coming on.

uh, if it works for 90 days, and if it works after that if you pay for it, then...

Vista is an ambitious project, I figure it will be done somewhere around Spring 2009 or so.

The only really working parental control is to stay next to the kids when they are online. (a bit of a pain tho... but working ;-)) )
As far as Vista is concerned. Do as I did when XP came out; that is to say: "stick to w2k until xp sp2 comes out". Same "law" applies to Vista.
In case it may help... I had just to rebuild a computer and reinstall everything on it (XP, Office etc...) What happenned was that I couldn't do the updates (even with a genuine XP) since I didn't have the admin rights! Bullocks. I am the admin. My solution since no one had any idea of how to work around that one. Erase everything and start all over again. Computer is OK now.

With M$ in particular, I always see the first release as a beta version. Unless they're gonna give me incentive to test it for them, I won't use it... and with all I've been reading about DRM, etc...

Oops, they did it again, I'd say. Here in France even Microsoft doesn't have the right to sell preinstalled versions without at least a version of the original package on CD. You can always ask them for a CD of Vista. You've got a problem with their stuff. You bought it (I suppose ;-)) ). Or borrow a copy from a friend, but use your own Product Key.

This is a fairly recent development in the US, you used to always get at least a restore CD, sometimes even a Windows CD seperately. Not anymore though, just a picture book for morons showing how to turn it on.

Speaking of Vista disappointment, I recently have had a Pocket PC quit connecting, a fairly generic thumbdrive with all my tools on it quit being recognized and RDC not connect properly. All of this after installing 'critical updates'. They need to finish this POS OS soon or I am giving up on it for a few years.

one theory put forward is that my kids have downloaded something to bust parental controls, sounds plausible.

parental controls are no substitute for parents' control.

As soon as someone tries to block something, someone else will figure a way around it.
