Good idea, I will play the lottery, but only buy the last ticket on the roll.

So let me get this straight...out of an annual payment of $500,000 she only gets $34,000???  What kind of shit is that?

From: RobinD On: 2007/05/21 00:55:04
Huntress, It's spread over 20 years so should be $50,000 annually (not $500,000). $34,000 was after taxes. I think I would take the lump sum and invest it myself though. One million even placed safely in the bank should be worth a bit more after 20 years.

She loses 28% to taxes which is about typical in Amerika. I would take it either way, money is money. Though I guess just putting it in the bank would garner more interest than would be lost to inflation, probably.

at least she's smart enough to know she's going to blow it.
i'm too stoopid for that.
i'd get the lump sum and find me a hoochie to spend it on.
wouldn't take me 5 years either.

I beg to differ...did any of you bother to work out the math on a calulator?  I did. 10M/20yrs is 500K, NOT 50K.

From: RobinD On: 2007/05/22 00:54:57
I did! I did! It's $10 and $1m

'Schneider decided to buy that last scratch-off ticket with the $10 she found, and it ended up being worth $1 million.'

(calculators pah! never trust a machine, perhaps yours has a dodgy decimal button?)

Still 50kpa, but I wonder what the lottery company does with the interest she could be earning.

<red face> I could have sworn it said $10M!!!  My bad.  [sad]

Don't worry, it's easy to slip up by 9 million or so. I'm sure we've all done it - and maybe nobody will notice...

I now think the story is a fake, created by the winner just to really annoy people now that she can afford to. Perhaps she has a secret dislike of the guy who didn't buy the last ticket, and maybe one of the people she asked if they'd dropped the money was rude to her. What a fun way to get back at them!
