I am, believe it or not, going to rebuild my windows 98 system,(hard drive was dying, got a new used one for free :)
What do I do about 1. Security fixes, is there a final win 98 se build somewhere? 2. Firewall? 3. Virus scanner? 4. IE6? 5. PDF, and Flash? 6. Direct x (I suppose 8.x should work)?
Yes, laff if you want, but serious answers are appreciated.

Doesn't 98 have windows update?
For a firewall, I'd go with ZoneAlarm.
For a PDF reader, go with Foxit
And check out http://www.oldversion.com/ which has a ton of stuff that would work well on 98.

What he said.
>> laff if you want
Why?? It has taken me a lot of years, time, and effort, to get 98 running the way I want it. Not crashing! : D
For AV I am using AVG 7.5 Free Also AdAware SE Free and Spybot S&D
Browsers are IE5.5 (when I have to) and Firefox 2.x (I love it) IE6 should be OK. But it was so wanky with 98 at first, I never bothered with it.
DirectX - Either 8.x or 9c

I have used this one several times, with no problems. About a 16MB download.

Something about one of the sites.
I do have Windows 2000, but I am hestitant to use it since machine is from 1999 (has isa slots).
Would 2000 be safer? I know McAfee recommends not using VirusScan for Win98se (VXD problems, which I have already encountered)? IE6.6 Service Packs Hot fixes?

>> Would 2000 be safer?
Depends on what you mean by 'safer'. It is more secure, and still runs most of the 'newer' software.
What cpu speed is it?
And as much as I like W98SE, I am seriously thinking of going to W2K Pro SP4 on my next rig (Athlon 2100+ [1.7GHz])
>> Something about one of the sites
What about it?
>> IE6.6 - Service Packs - Hot fixes?
This is all I have (other than MS's site)
IE Download (From 1.0 to 6.0) and service Packs http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit
More if you need them:
You can get a full IE6 download here http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/6.0 The download is about 76 MB, so it may take awhile.
The full package (for multiple OS's) is here: http://public.p...ror.com/pub/microsoft/ie/6.0sp1/

if you post the message 'Windoze 9T8 is Kool' into 100 other threads, then Windows 98 will work for you, but if you don't your house will collapse.
pass it on.

i have a legacy win98 machine that i would love to upgrade but it's running an old medical dos app and i'm not confident that it'll run on a different os. it should, but back in 1995 in the metallurgy lab, a friend of the boss decided that the computer that ran our spectrometer should be on win95 instead of win 3.1. so he upgraded the os and completely disabled the spectrometer because the software couldn't run on it. so i'll be dipped in dog shit before i try and upgrade this. especially since it's inside my dmz and i don't allow web surfing or email on it. ms doesn't patch it anymore. how can they? they just paid six billion dollars for an advertising company. it's much more important to toss popups around than to support their products.

Going from win 9X to NT or w2k often proves to be a real PITA when it comes to lab hardware and their associated control software. Often the software relies on direct hardware control, which isn't possible with the HAL used in NT4 and later... So your spectrometer or whatever will not be accessible through normal control programs. Been there, done that and I didn't like it very much. The only solution is if there is a new NT/w2k-compliant version of the software you need.
Depending on the hardware inside and the uses of this 98 machine, a small-footprint Linux distro may be an option unless MS O/S is really called for. OTOH, 98 isn't dead by any means. Lots of new hardware stuff come with 98 drivers, at least if it's about USB connectivity, which is sooo popular now. /RID

The last review I read said WMA was as good as any of them. I think v9 has DVD capabilities. I am still using v7.01 myself, but it doesn't get used much.
