a friend who's still on dialup is thinking of bumping up to broadband but doesn't know which plan to go with.  i've suggested running some kinda bandwidth monitoring software for a month to see how much data she's burning at the moment (the dialup account is unlimited), but i don't actually know any specific app to recommend, and i'm a bit worried about dropping spyware/etc on her box.

anyone running anything like this themselves? any recommendations?

If she gets hispeed, she'll use more anyways, regardless of the amount she uses now.

What types of options does she have? Base the choice on the amount she'll be willing to pay.

yeah i know that, but at least if we know how much she's using on dialup she knows her absolute bare minimum required.

bandwidth in australia is *not* cheap -- sure, the big providers advertise cable for $20/month but that's with a whole 100mb/200mb peak/offpeak throughput, which a typical user is going to rip through in about 3 days tops and then spend the rest of the month shaped to dialup speed anyway.

you can't really choose broadband plans based on price here because of the cost of bandwidth; you really need to know how much bandwidth you need at a bare minimum (and how much you're likely to actually use once you get used to broadband speeds) and then shop around based on that instead.

(the small providers offer better data for around the same price point -- one's got 1gb for $25 -- but they almost always charge extra for excess bandwidth consumption rather than shaping the connection speed down, which is fine for people who plan to suck down a lot of data anyway, but isn't so useful when you just want a fast, fixed-price connection you can budget around)

Or, count the number of flashes of the tx light on the modem and multiply by two for the number of bits per unit of time.
