*I feel like I'm the only one who asks qs here*

I want to upgrade the ram on my in-laws 5 year old Dell. It's only got 256mb ram...

I've done lots of upgrades over the years, so I'm drowning in ram modules - I figured I'd reuse them on my inlaws. Or try to.

but how can I tell ECC from Non-ECC???

else - the info seems to be on the modules - such as 256mb DDRPC2700 cl2.5
and as for hte # of pins - well, the bag they're in - which would have been the bag from the newcomers says 184 pin. So - I do believe i can use this memory.. except for the ECC thingy..

*help*

ECC RAM has an extra chip (9 per side)
non-ECC RAM has 8 per side

Most likely you have non-ECC.  The ECC stuff would be an unusual thing to have in a home computer.

thank you!!!

anything else I should worry about? Crucial says that DDR should be backwards compatible to the older stuff...

The motherboard manual should list the configurations of slots you can use.  Using RAM that is higher rated is not a problem (like PC2700 where PC2100 is called for) if that's what you mean by backward compatible.  Just give it a shot and see if it works.

i guess i could look at the manuals online if I'm rather worried.
btw - I didn't mean 2100 vs 2700... lemme find the text...
oh - you're right. that's what they were talking about. I misread
I should be able to install my old ram w/o a problem. thanks!
