I know you can overclock the CPU... but is there an equivalent form RAM???

Or is the RAM maximum a hardware limit or software limitation?

Basically - I've got an old PC I'm using as a server.. but it's maxxed out at 512mb... Other than buying a new system, what can I do?

I'm not against building something from scratch - as long as I have guidance.. I haven't put one together for over 10 years...

A new system would be best, so it can be a proper server.. tho, like I said - budget is tight. A new mobo to fit in the current case.. I wonder if I can use the RAM I have laying around (slowly build it up)...

anyone interested in helping taking something like this on?

I *think* the RAM amount is a hardware thing. The memory controller on the mobo knows how to handle a certain amount of RAM and that's it. It may be a question of available address lines or something like that, or it might be a firmware issue. In the later case, it may be worth checking for BIOS updates to your mobo; there may be a fix for the RAM amount limit.

Usually, if the server isn't used for programs, or if it isn't a windows based mail server or something, the RAM you have installed - or the limit you mention (512 MB) - may well be enough for your needs.

hmm.. my "server" is also my "tivo" - which is why I would like to increase ram... most file conversions for my media mvp can't be handled
