Title: Flashing the old BIOS!?
Back to Hardware

Hello folks,

I'm very confoozed. And I need a bit of help.

I'm having a spot of trouble with the New PC. It freezes occasionally.

Komplett are telling me now that I should "Flash the BIOS".

Woohoo. Can I have chips with that please?

Anyhow.

I'm going to the manufacturer's web site:

http://www.msi....pt_bos_detail.php?UID=731&kind=1

Lovely. I download the fecker. Read the instructions which talk about "Award BIOS Flash Procedure" and "AMI BIOS Flash Procedure"

What's the difference? What I noticed is that in one case it's talking about running:

awdfl865 "BIOS File"

and in the other case it's

adsfi719 "BIOS File"

So let me get this right.....

To flash the BIOS you need two things, a "flash utility" and a "BIOS File". How do you know what Flash Utility to use? Now when I start up the PC it does yabber on about "Award ...." so I reckon it's the Award one. Am I right?

Problem is, the Zip file I downloaded doesn't contain either a "awdfl" file, OR an "adsfi" one. It contains something named:

Afud408.exe

Yippee. Well I tried it and it complained "BIOS doesn't support AFU Utility" or something like that.

Now what!?

Can I download the AWDFL865.exe separately from somewhere else!?

Thanks

Pino

What's the model of the mobo?

From: Send Carobit Mail Pino Carafa On: 2006/09/18 14:23:09
ROTFLMAO

OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY.

I'm pissing my pants here folks.

No fucking WONDER I can't get it to flash the feckin' BIOS.

MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

You see.....

THIS is what I ordered:
http://www.msi....pt_bos_detail.php?UID=731&kind=1

THAT is what's actually in the PC.
http://www2.abi...NAME=KN9+SLI&fMTYPE=Socket%20AM2

I kid you not.

Now the Mobo that's in there is actually 40 euro more expensive. But is it 40 euro BETTER!?!?

From: Send Carobit Mail Huntress On: 2006/09/18 14:37:54
That's a completely different brand!!!  LOL

From: Send Carobit Mail Pino Carafa On: 2006/09/18 14:45:04
Yup.

Well here we are. After the Flash....

From: Send Carobit Mail Huntress On: 2006/09/18 14:51:55
lol  Looks like you made it through ok.  And yes, it's a much better mobo.

From: Send Carobit Mail Pino Carafa On: 2006/09/18 15:03:29
grin

Sleeping dogs then, eh?

From: Send Carobit Mail Huntress On: 2006/09/18 15:12:22
You betcha!  laughing

From: Send Carobit Mail hes On: 2006/09/18 17:07:53
That's why I order the mobo seperately and install it myself LOL

From: Send Carobit Mail Pino Carafa On: 2006/09/18 23:20:12
PCIE voltage still climbs to 1.7

I think I shall be demanding a replacement. Face it. Better a mobo that is nominally less good, but that doesn't cause trouble, than *this* crap.

From: Baldrick On: 2006/09/19 01:12:32
Looks like you're not alone...

The only common factor I can see is that people having no problems with the board are running it with high-spec DDR2-800 memory by top-notch brands like Corsair and Crucial.

A very good mainboard write-up at http://enthusia...art=MTEyMywxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA== also mentions that the board exhibited stability issues under heavy load.

The forum is worth visiting, they mention a BIOS release (14) which looks like it may sort out many stability issues at:
    http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1089025

Edit: The cynical side of me suggests this is perhaps why you received this mainboard as an alternative... maybe the supplier has an issue with customer returns...

From: Send Carobit Mail Pino Carafa On: 2006/09/19 01:27:41
Yup. That's exactly what I think.

From: Baldrick On: 2006/09/19 01:28:27
Dang, write up link doesn't work, try enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTEzOSw0LCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA==

When I click on a link the URLs are lowercased which I suspect is causing the problem (running IE7 RC1).

It's a shame (and possibly worth persevering a bit) because it's very well specced, and a very good performer. If the latest BIOS sorts out the (alleged) problems with various memory timings, you could have a steal on your hands there...

From: Send Carobit Mail Pino Carafa On: 2006/09/19 01:41:24
>  If the latest BIOS

According to t'website it's version 1.5. That right?

I flashed to that. Hasn't crashed yet, but I've only booted it up once since, so that hardly counts. The PCIE voltage happily climbs up and up though. Just like before.

From: Baldrick On: 2006/09/19 02:47:42
Looks right to me. I reckon the PCIe voltage may be a red herring - am I right in assuming you've got quite a powerful video card? Are any system hangs correlated to intensive video performance? In fact, is the CPU / Video / memory / PSU rating all in accordance with these:

Baldrick is right about the ASUS being a better board.  I always get ABit and ASUS mixed up, which I shouldn't since I'm running an ASUS myself now.  Used to swear by Giga-Byte boards until they went downhill recently.

From: Send Carobit Mail Huntress On: 2006/09/19 02:50:45
It's an SLI board so that might be the source of higher voltages.  Most SLI video cards need their own power from the PSU though.

From: Send Carobit Mail Pino Carafa On: 2006/09/19 03:33:13
Hm.

Dear Sir,

According to our PC Builder engineer:

"I would recommend that the customer first tries to see if his system works stable now.
The mainboard is my mistake because the MSI mainboard had a overheating problem (production fault).
That's why it was changed for the Abit (EUR 30 upgrade)"

Hope this helps and sorry for the inconvenience caused.

Best regards
Komplett

Yeah.

My response:

I could give it a try, but I'm very worried. The climbing PCIE voltages *can't* be right. And I've found several posts through google where people are having similar issues:

This, in fact, sounds *exactly* like what I'm suffering:
http://forum.ab...m/showthread.php?t=112118&page=3

From reading the lamentations on that, it sounds like it's only going to be a matter of time before it goes belly up on me.

Somebody mentioned USB "lockups". I think I experienced those too.

I will give it a try, but if I am getting any more crap from this mobo, I'll be looking for a refund.

Regards

Pino Carafa

Komplett say they're happy to refund. Which means I can just go and order another board.

Now you're all talking about ASUS? What about this one for a replacement:

http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=321031

I know it's also an SLI, but the non-SLI one is not currently in stock.... And Komplett will want their old board back as soon as poss...

Cheers

P

Hm. I just read through the whole forum thread and changed my mind to.....

https://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=321030

Two of them went for it. One at least seems very happy......

From: Baldrick On: 2006/09/19 11:04:00
The nVidia 590 chipset is slightly more mature and more stable AFAIK. It's their highest-end AMD chipset AFAIK. Should be too, for 200 euro. Shame it's out of stock. If they offer you this badboy, I'd snap it up in an instant.

From: Baldrick On: 2006/09/19 11:09:51
PS. "rozeboosje" ?

From: Send Carobit Mail Pino Carafa On: 2006/09/19 11:17:27
> Shame it's out of stock

That's because I picked up the last one tongue

From: Send Carobit Mail Pino Carafa On: 2006/09/19 11:18:26
rozeboosje - a name I commonly use on line. Also my YIM id, and the one I use on google mail. Er.... it's named after the cat, Ok? lol

From: Send Carobit Mail Pino Carafa On: 2006/09/19 11:20:52
Ha! And I posted that comment, and the bastard froze again. So the new BIOS doesn't fix *that* problem either.

From: Send Carobit Mail Pino Carafa On: 2006/09/20 02:10:50
Wow. I just saw some reviews for the new board I ordered. I think I chose well this time. smile

From: Send Carobit Mail dash On: 2006/10/04 00:51:07
I bet you typed the order up in Dutch.

Dash

From: Send Carobit Mail Pino Carafa On: 2006/10/04 01:21:39
Well, the new board is working fine and dandy. Had a wee bit of trouble with the software for the on-board wireless but when I uninstalled it and installed the drivers only they, knock wood, went away.

BTW, Dash, is that "Dash" of the "Robert, Helen, Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack" variety?

From: Send Carobit Mail dash On: 2006/10/04 01:38:54
More like the "of Jack Daniels" variety.

So I Guess everything worked out ok?
